Full and Partial Dentures

If you are missing multiple teeth or all of your teeth, our dentist may recommend dentures to restore both the appearance and function of your smile. Dentures are removable dental prosthetics that can help you regain your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently.

Full and Partial Dentures: The Difference

There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. Our dental team will help determine which option is best suited to your needs.

  • Full Dentures: These are recommended when all natural teeth in a dental arch are missing. Full dentures consist of an acrylic base that holds the replacement teeth, which is positioned over the gums. Conventional full dentures are fitted after any remaining teeth are removed and the mouth has healed—a process that can take several months. Immediate full dentures, on the other hand, are placed immediately after the teeth are extracted. Because the jawbone reshapes during the healing process, immediate dentures will need to be relined after several months for a proper fit.
  • Partial Dentures: If some of your natural teeth remain, partial dentures may be the better option. Partial dentures use a metal framework that attaches to your remaining teeth, providing a removable alternative to a dental bridge.
